Fun Fact #9

Where did giant pandas get their spots?

Scientists don’t know why giant pandas are colored the way they are. Some think that their bold black and white markings may have helped protect them from predators once upon a time. The black and white pattern may have broken up the bear’s outline in snowy environments. And sort of like a zebra’s stripes, it would have helped them blend into their shade-dappled surroundings.

Quick Quiz #9

Panda’s Bear Body: What do pandas look like? (Answers hidden below)

The giant panda is a member of the bear family Ursidae, so it is no wonder that it looks like a bear. It is a bear! Giant pandas have black, wooly coats of fur to keep them warm in the cool forests where they live. The fur on their ears, around their eyes, and on their muzzles, legs and shoulders is black. The rest of the panda’s body is white.

Giant pandas have strong jaws and large molar teeth. This helps them crush the tough bamboo that they eat.
