Panda Restaurant Group’s support of Panda Preservation
Today, giant pandas are at risk of becoming extinct. In fact, the giant panda is listed in the World Conservation Union's (IUCN's) Red List of Threatened Animals. It is one of the most critically endangered species in the world because there are only about 1,000 left in the wild. They are threatened by [poaching], human encroachment, habitat loss and trouble breeding in captivity. This is why it is important for people to learn about them - so that they do not disappear forever.
Panda Restaurant Group, Inc. has sponsored the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China. Our support assisted the world-renowned center in its important efforts toward the captive conservation of giant pandas and its ultimate goal to reintroduce giant pandas to the wild.
What can you do? Be curious! Through Panda Kids, you can become aware of the rich heritage of the panda in China.
About 140 pandas live in zoos and breeding centers around the world, but mostly in China. Many people work at animal preserves and zoos to help preserve pandas and other endangered animals. They include zookeepers, veterinarians, trainers and scientists. For reasons that scientists don't understand completely, giant pandas have been difficult to breed in captivity. In fact, natural breeding of zoo giant pandas is still a pretty rare occurrence. This means that the zoo giant panda population cannot yet sustain itself on its own. Someday, scientists hope to reintroduce giant pandas into the wild.
